Staff Picks Week 2: Steven Universe

Welcome to week two of Staff Picks: Work-from-Home edition! In this series, our library staff will be recommending some of our favorite books, movies, TV shows, games, podcasts…all kinds of fun stuff that have been entertaining us since we’ve been working from home. This week, a TV recommendation from Amedeo, one of our research and instruction librarians–Steven Universe!

Steven Universe character bannerFrom Amedeo: “This is the kind of show the world needs right now. It took me a little while to get into it, but once I did, I was awestruck by how sweet, touching, and engrossing it became. I can’t think of any show that examines themes of family, gender, and the power of kindness with such thoughtfulness and care, especially while also avoiding becoming overly saccharine. Oh, and the musical numbers are numerous and excellent. (Just wait until Episode 53. It’ll come faster than you think, as the episodes are around 10 minutes long.)”

From IMDB: “This series is set in the fictional Beach City, where ageless alien warriors, the Crystal Gems, live in an ancient beachside temple, protecting the world from evil. They project female humanoid forms from magical gemstones that are the core of their being. The Crystal Gems are Garnet, Amethyst, Pearl and Steven, a young half-human, half-Gem boy who inherited his gemstone from his mother, the Gems’ former leader Rose Quartz. As Steven tries to figure out his powers, he spends his days with his human father Greg, his friend Connie, other people in Beach City, or the other Gems, whether to help them save the world or just to hang out. He explores the abilities passed down to him by his mother, which include fusion (the ability of Gems to merge their identities and bodies to form a new and more powerful personality).”

Steven Universe is available on Hulu, or is available from Smith once campuses are up and running again.
