From the Archives: History of the Div Free Bell

From the desk of Archives Student Assistant Gianna Paladino:
Hampshire legends say that ringing the Div Free Bell before completing your Div III will curse you from ever graduating from Hampshire — but did you know that when it was first donated (circa 1983) that it was meant to be rung after passing any Div?
Bonus info about the bell(s):
The first Div Free Bell is kept in the Archives! It was donated to the college by alum Jonathan Frank 76F, who wanted students to have a way to celebrate passing their Division III. It was an old brass bell that originally belonged to a ship called the Olinda. The original bell developed a crack and, in December of 2003, was replaced with a new bell created by Verdin Church Bell Co. Image of Hampshire bell
