Hampshire College, an independent, innovative liberal arts institution and member of the Five College consortium, is accepting applications for an assistant director – livestock/pasture for its Farm Center. The Hampshire College Farm is a thriving working farm providing campus and community members with organically grown produce and pasture-raised meat, as well as rich educational opportunities. Whether exploring plant science, animal behavior, or green design, Hampshire students and faculty use the farm as a hub for investigating the intellectual, political, and scientific issues surrounding food production. We are seeking an experienced livestock farmer to join our dynamic team.
The assistant director – livestock/pasture operates under the supervision of the director of farm programs and in close collaboration with the assistant director-vegetables/student outreach. The assistant director is responsible for all management duties related to operation of the livestock farm, including supervision of casual employees, student employees, and summer interns; production, distribution, and sales of meat and other farm products; the creation and tracking of livestock enterprise budgets; and general farm and field maintenance. The assistant director will also provide farm-based educational opportunities and programming to students, faculty, and others. The assistant director will work with a variety of livestock, including cows, pigs, chickens, sheep, and goats, and is ultimately responsible for farm livestock health, well-being, and general care. The assistant director – livestock/pasture is expected to be available in case of emergency, as well as during school closures and times when student workers may not be available.
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent related experience and a minimum of three seasons of livestock and pasture management experience (with an emphasis on meat production) or other farm-related experience is required. Successful candidate must have the ability to operate and maintain farm equipment and drive a truck with a livestock trailer; be able to work with multiple species of livestock; possess exceptional knowledge of agronomic practices and relevant food safety regulations with an understanding of how diverse agricultural enterprises interact; and be able to create and maintain livestock enterprise budgets. It is essential that the assistant director be able to interact positively with a diverse population of students, staff, faculty and farm visitors. The assistant director will organize, supervise and motivate student work-study crews and summer interns, with the ability to translate and teach complicated work skills to all levels of competencies. Candidate should have excellent record maintenance; possess proficient organizational and time management skills; have strong written and oral communication skills; and exhibit exceptional interpersonal skills. The assistant director must be able to work independently and have knowledge of and commitment to Hampshire’s unique educational experience. This position requires a valid driver’s license, a DOT Commercial Driver Medical Certification (or the ability to obtain one) and successful completion of the College’s defensive driving training course. Occasional evening and weekend hours are required. Employment is dependent on successful completion of a pre-employment physical, as this position requires the ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
