Join R.W. Kern Center Coordinator Claire Shillington on a tour of the digestive tract of our composting toilets. See how our waterless system breaks down human waste to create compost we’re hoping to use to enrich a new planter bed on our site.

If you’re interested in learning more about how these composting systems work, we highly recommend checking out the Clivus Multrum website.

What happens to the negative air pressure in the system? Is it pumped outside?

Are the liquids treated when they go into the other system?

The air from the composters is exhausted through the roof. The liquids (leachate) are sent to the municipal waste treatment plant, like septic waste. We hope to one day be able to treat this ourselves for use as fertilizer!

Just watched your Build Show presentation…AWESOME!!! Great work. What was the brand name/manufacturer that you’re using for the blackwater management of the system?
