Students in Professor Chris Cianfrani’s Sustainability in a Changing Climate course are using a natural science lens to explore the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) with a specific focus on water, energy, and food production. Students in this course are working to develop an understanding of the role science and technology can play in carrying out the social and economic development agenda. Students are exploring the implementation of the SDGs on a global scale as well as regionally, specifically by using the Hampshire College campus as a living laboratory to provide local examples of how sustainable solutions can be implemented. Students will discuss the Living Building Challenge (LBC), the R.W. Kern Center’s net zero energy and water systems, the college’s 19-acre solar array, and the farm center. Students may choose to do projects related to the systems.
