How do you know if your space is getting enough ventilation? One way is to measure carbon dioxide (CO2) levels. A poorly ventilated space will build up CO2 from peoples’ exhalations, so monitoring CO2 is a good way to keep an eye on ventilation efficacy.
At the R.W. Kern Center, ventilation is provided by an Energy Recovery Ventilation (ERV) system which operates according to CO2 sensors. If CO2 levels rise above 1000 parts per million (ppm), the system kicks on to bring fresh air into the space. This feature keeps our indoor air healthy while saving energy by running ventilation only when it is needed. CO2 sensing controls can also be incorporated into many other types of ventilation system.
This type of air quality assurance has become even more valuable during the COVID-19 pandemic, and is a critical part of helping to keep indoor spaces safe.
