Greywater codes & policy

Until recently, many states did not allow—or did not have any policies that addressed—the reuse or treatment of greywater separate from blackwater. Even now, the states that do regulate greywater reuse vary vastly in terms of what they allow. Reusing untreated or partially-treated greywater for irrigation or toilet flushing—or even just treating greywater separately from blackwater—reduces the amount of water we use and the amount of energy associated with treating wastewater. Performance-based greywater codes developed from scientific research are needed more widely in order to promote safe and effective greywater reuse.
