Smart building technologies can benefit greatly from the accessibility, transparency, and reliability of open-source software and hardware. At the R.W. Kern Center, Hampshire College Professor Steve Roof uses open-source software to view and analyze data collected from our greywater tanks. This data was essential for commissioning, as well as for troubleshooting our built-in proprietary water monitoring system. In the photo above, check out the tangle of electrical conduits and wires that includes Steve’s Arduino open-source microcontroller, which collects and sends data to this site, powered by OpenEnergyMonitor.org.
