Local materials at the RWKC

Text reads "Local Materials at RWKC." An image of an oak tree being chopped down on the R.W. Kern Center site sits in a box on the left. Two arrows point to the right where there is an image of the rounded oak tables at the R.W. Kern Center and an image of the Kern Cafe's bar. A banner at the bottom of the image includes a simple shape of the R.W. Kern Center and reads: 100 Days of Building Solutions.

In order to maximize solar energy, three oak trees were removed from the property surrounding the R.W. Kern Center. They were taken to Curb to Curb Lawn Care in Amherst, MA, dried in Hardwick Kiln in Hardwick, MA, and then transported to Northampton where Jonathan Wright, Hampshire alum and owner of Wright Builders, transformed them into fourteen round table tops. The tables now reside on the first floor of the building. The remaining oak boards were installed on the front face of the Kern Kafé.
