Greywater system

A photo taken from the second floor of the R.W. Kern Center looking down on the first floor highlights 3 empty tables and one table with two people sitting at it. The people are looking at the green plants that line outline the interior wall of the building. A banner at the bottom of the image includes a simple shape of the R.W. Kern Center and reads: 100 Days of Building Solutions.

Today we highlight the science behind our greywater treatment system.

To treat our greywater, we use two constructed wetlands—one inside and one outside. These low-tech wetlands—a couple feet of sand and rocks topped with soil and plants—use natural processes to physically, chemically, and biologically remove contaminants from greywater. This system allows us to put all our cleaned, used water back into the ground, closing the loop on our site’s water cycle.
