Greywater system vs blackwater system

Text on top of a photo with green plants. Text reads: greywater: water discharged from sinks, showers, laundry, drinking fountains, etc., but not including water discharged from toilets or urinals. Blackwater: discharged water containing solid and liquid waste from toilets and urinals. A banner at the bottom of the image includes a simple shape of the R.W. Kern Center and reads: 100 Days of Building Solutions.

Designing buildings with plumbing systems that separate greywater from blackwater can reduce the amount of money and energy spent on treating wastewater. Not all wastewater needs to be treated to the same standards. Greywater can be reused in irrigation and for flushing toilets, with little to no treatment, depending on the source.

Stick with us in the coming posts as we show you how we deal with wastewater at the R.W. Kern Center.
