In order to maximize solar energy, three oak trees were removed from the property surrounding the R.W. Kern Center. They were taken to Curb to Curb Lawn Care in Amherst, MA, dried in Hardwick Kiln in Hardwick, MA, and then transported to Northampton where Jonathan Wright, Hampshire alum and owner of Wright Builders, transformed them into fourteen round table tops. The tables now reside on the first floor of the building. The remaining oak boards were installed on the front face of the Kern Kafé.
