Pearl Primus was the commencement speaker the year I graduated, and it meant so much to me personally as I had come to Hampshire sight-unseen as an older transfer student specifically because of the Five College Dance Program. She was fantastic!

When Daphne Lowell went on leave unexpectedly, I was lucky enough to assist in leading her dance ethnology class, and I was even luckier to meet and work with Dr. Primus. I would meet her before class and escort her to the studio, was graced with her stories and dances in class, and afterward, we’d sit in the cafe while eating cookies. She was a treasure.
