How to optimize building orientation

An aerial view of the R.W. Kern Center that shows solar panels on the roof. Text reads "optimizing orientation." A banner at the bottom of the image includes a simple shape of the R.W. Kern Center and reads: 100 Days of Building Solutions.

Optimizing building orientation is a fundamental passive design strategy. Too much southern exposure in a warm climate can cause overheating. Too little can make buildings feel dark in the depths of winter. How do you strike the right balance? One method is to use a building model like Autodesk’s Revit Insights that allows you to manipulate building direction and see the associated effect on predicted energy performance.

Check out this video to see the process in action.
