What is water resilience?

A stainless steal downspout leads to a small and large filter, all of which sits atop a large concrete cistern. The grass is green in the foreground and lush, green trees are visible in the background. A banner at the bottom of the image includes a simple shape of the R.W. Kern Center and reads: 100 Days of Building Solutions.

Water is a limited resource and is energy-intensive to treat and distribute. Two things to consider:

1. A building’s water needs should fit within the resource limits of its site, meaning it should not use more water than is available (via groundwater or rainwater) on its physical site. Systems like wells or rainwater harvesting can add resiliency, as they don’t rely on a municipal water hookup.

2. Use the right water for the right job; not all building water needs require potable water. Irrigating? Flushing toilets? Think greywater or rainwater.
