Behind Moroccan Wall by Boris Artzybasheff shows a romanticized image of a Moroccan woman in front of a wall, surrounded by exotic foliage. In the title, the word ‘behind’ implies that the viewer has been granted special access to that which takes place on the other side of the wall, a land of mystery and mysticism. This image is an illustration from a book by the same name, written by Henriette Célarié. The book contains short stories of native Moroccan women’s daily lives that are told from an imperialistic perspective that both romanticizes and exoticizes their day-to-day experiences.
