Meet Our Scientists!
The Faculty!
Dr. Juliet Johnston (she/they) is an Assistant Professor at Hampshire College
who focuses on environmental microbiology in engineered systems such as
wastewater treatment plants. She is often found out on hikes with her husky, Ava.
Willow Coville (she/her) is the laboratory technician at Hampshire College,
supporting faculty and ensuring lab safety. Willow is primarily interested in botany and ecology;
in particular the survival strategies of plants and how they relate to each other across the grand
tapestry of plant taxonomy.
Dr. Heather Rosenfeld (they/she) is the director of the Spatial Analysis Lab at Smith College.
They are keen on mapping for environmental and social justice, accessibility, and for
fun. In their spare time, they can be found taking glamour shots of mushrooms.
Dr. Anna Marie LaChance (she/her) is a chemical engineer, STEM educator, and transgender advocate. Through her innovative teaching work
as well as her creative projects, she is an advocate for abolitionist engineering education and intersectional transfeminism. Currently, she
works as a Lecturer for the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, where she offers courses on
process control, thermodynamics, green chemistry, and polymer processing from a justice-oriented perspective. Website: www.ThatAnnaMarie.com
Luce Ward (they/them) is teaching-focused faculty in the Department of Geosciences at Smith College. In addition to teaching intro Earth
science courses and working with students to research the diversity and evolution of environmentally relevant microorganisms, they are
passionate about advocating for improving the accessibility of science education. They spend their free time living in the woods with their
spouse and two dogs surrounded by books and board games.
Sasha Adkins (they/them) teaches environmental health at the University of Massachusetts Amherst
and in their free time, organizes for environmental justice with Voces Fieles Comunitarias Contra la
Opresión in Cicero, Illinois (a Latine suburb of Chicago).
Dr. Sarah Perry (she/her) is on the faculty in Chemical Engineering at UMass Amherst where she serves
as the Director of Undergraduate Studies. She teaches Introduction to Chemical Engineering and an
elective on Microfluidics and Microscale Systems. Her research focuses on using polymer self-assembly
an her two cats. LlabLlama is her llab mascot.
Stacy Dickerman (they/them/theirs) is a linguist by training and a senior desktop support technician at UMass Amherst
by profession. Equally as happy to talk about psycholinguistic and neuroimaging experiments as they are systems
administration and keeping old computers alive using open source software. In their free time, you can find them knitting,
learning ASL, and hanging out with their dog, Casanova.
The Students!
Sarah Rost (she/her) is doctoral student at UMass Amherst studying higher education, and works on
campus in disability services. She is passionate about student mental health, campus wellbeing, and
social science research methodology. Her research focuses on Asian American student mental health
literacy. Outside of work and school, Sarah enjoys spending time with her cats, Lily (pictured) and
Henry, cooking, and reminding her wife (Rachel) to take care of herself.
Leon Dyer (they/them) is a research assistant who acts as a lab manager for the Tree Ring Lab at
Harvard Forest in Petersham, MA. Leon uses tree cores collected from old growth forests to study forest
ecology through time. In their free time Leon enjoys cuddling with their cat, Alphonse, playing video
games, and reading fantasy and sci-fi novels.
Ava Sharpe (she/her) is an undergrad senior at Mount Holyoke College
studying geology and geography. Ava is interested in accessible science
education and multidisciplinary approaches to learning.
She is from Texas but loves the rocks in New England.
Juliette Husson de Sampigny (she/her) is a first year student at
Hampshire College studying psychology. She failed chemistry sophomore
year, but made the comeback of the century here at Hampshire College.
She is frequently found on walks outside with friends.
Zi Sykes (he/him) is a DIV I student studying on a pre-med track.
Back home in Michigan, Zi lives on a farm with a variety of animals.
His favorite being his peacocks. You can often find him out and about
campus writing poetry or working with his service dog in training, Thea.
Arum Cohen (He/They) is a student at Hampshire College
working towards a degree in elementary education. He loves birds.
Allie Bogyo (She/they) is a Division 2 (second year) student
at Hampshire College. She is working to become a vet tech,
and is especially interested in rodents! You will hardly see her
without her beloved guinea pig, Chicken.
Virginia Wardlaw (they/them) is a second year Div II at Hampshire College, focussing on
Environmental Education. When not in school they work as a seasonal environmental educator at
the Hitchcock Center for the Environment. Having grown up in the Connecticut River Valley, they
are incredibly fond of the local ecosystem, and are over the moon for salamander season!
Evie Fraker (She/They) is a student at Hampshire College studying
Biology and Pre-Medicine!
Annie Doherty (she/her) is a second year computer science and anthropology student
at Hampshire. She is from Portland, Oregon and has been working in high tech since she was
sixteen. When Annie is not tearing up the keyboard she loves trying new coffee spots, snowboarding,
camping, robotics and road tripping (one of her life goals is to visit all of the national parks!)
Ziggy Harkham (He/Him) is a Div I student at Hampshire College, studying education
in art and general ecology. He loves fungi, swimming, and his thrifted beanie baby collection.
Schuyler Durand (he/him) is a Div II student at Hampshire studying arts education.
Having grown up in Western Massachusetts, Schuyler loves being outdoors and
can often be found in a creek or the woods rockhounding!
Ezra Dakides (he/they)- Div II at Hampshire college going
into biochemistry of neuropsych.
Elinor Everett (they/them) is an undergraduate at UMass Amherst studying Sustainable
Food and Farming. They love animals, and nature more broadly. They also do historical
recreation (making clothes and fencing) and enjoy art.
Amrita Adak (she/they) is an alum of the University of Massachusetts Amherst with a degree in Neurobiology, Language, and Trauma.
Her current research focuses on the impact linguistic and cultural brokering can have on a child, specifically within the medical sphere.
She is a passionate advocate for intersectional STEM advocacy and community building. During their free time, Amrita can be found
crocheting capes for her friends’ pets, researching the etymology or random words, or playing another round of GeoGrid.
Ambar Hart González (she/her) is a Div III student at Hampshire College that is focusing on microscopy (about to graduate!!!).
If not in the lab looking through a microscope, she loves to read, dance and take naps. She is from Ponce, Puerto Rico which
means that she’sconstantly cold in Amherst (even after 4 years, still not used to it).
Leo Giannini (she/her) is a DIV III student at Hampshire College, focusing on Biochemistry and Visual Arts. Originally
from Croatia, she enjoys exploring where science and creativity meet. Outside of academics, Leo loves taking care of
her plants, watching anime, and hanging out with her very fluffy cat, Jojo (named after JoJo’s Bizzare Adventures).
Bryce Merrill (Fae/Them) is a Div 1 Hampshire student, fae are majoring
in queer studies, with a focus on trans and gender studies
Henry O’Brien (He/Him) is a DIV I student at Hampshire College
