BrainNOTE: Currently the ERP Lab is housed at Mt. Holyoke College while Dr. Couperus is there from Fall 2019-Spring 2022. Dr. Couperus is on leave from Hampshire and is working with current students but not taking on new students.

What is ERP?

human eeg without alpha rhythmERP stands for event-related potential, which is a particular method of examining EEG data (i.e. electroencephalographic data) based on particular timing with the presentation of a stimulus, or in other words, an “event.”

An electroencephalogram measures and records electrical impulses of the brain using metal electrodes that are placed over the scalp. In our lab, we use caps to measure 27 points on the scalp, as well as five others placed near the eyes and behind the ears to cancel out muscle activity and other electrical noise.

When a stimulus is presented, or an “event” occurs, there are many components of both negative and positive electrical valence that occur, and ERP studies examine these particular components of activity.
