about

The Reader is Hampshire College’s annual literary and visual arts journal produced completely by students. It aims to showcase student-produced works emblematic of Hampshire College at the time of publication.

Committees (visual, prose/poetry, and mixed media) formed in the Fall semester hold weekly discussions on the criteria for making selections and on the layout design. Anyone interested in joining a committee should plan to attend an interest meeting to be held within the first two weeks of the Fall.

Submissions are accepted throughout the school year with a deadline in early March and publication in late April/early May.

The Reader is free and published using the Student Activities Fund.

The last issue, Vol. 21 (Spring 2015), marked The Reader’s 21st year in publication.

submit

Submissions should be emailed to reader@hampshire.edu. The deadline for the 2016 issue will be in early March, with an exact date TBA. All current Hampshire students are encouraged to submit writing or artwork regardless of their academic focus. Please note the guidelines below before submitting.

  • Students may submit a total of up to four pieces of work (literary, visual, or mixed media).
  • Please include your name in the email, but exclude it from the submission(s).

prose/poetry

  • Each submission may not exceed more than six pages of 12 point text double-spaced.
  • Submissions are requested as attachments in .txt. or .doc/.docx format.

studio art/photography/film

  • Due to space limitations, series comprised of more than three pieces cannot be considered in their entirety.
  • If a submission is comprised of a series that the student would find unacceptable treated as separate pieces, this should be indicated in email.
  • High resolution (300 dpi or above) TIFs are preferable, but JPEGs are acceptable.
  • Indicate any information about the medium or format of the work you would like to have included in the journal.
  • If a student would like assistance in documenting a work they would like to submit (such as in the case of sculpture or performance), please send us an email at reader@hampshire.edu. (Preferably well before the submission deadline.)

mixed media

  • If a submission includes more than one of the attached files, please indicate this in the email.
  • Due to the complex nature of representing mixed media as well as non-print based material in a print format, layout staffers encourage students to detail how they would like their work represented in print.

fine print

All work is anonymized before being considered by the editorial teams.

Submitters will receive a confirmation email once their work has been received.

Those whose work is accepted will receive a proof of their work as it will be laid out in the book to which they may make corrections.

The Reader staff does their best to promptly notify submitters once editorial decisions have been made. If you have not heard back by the end of March, please feel free to contact us at reader@hampshire.edu.

All students are welcome to join the staff of The Reader. Based on students’ relevant experience and divisional status, the editors of the previous year decide who they would like to work with. There are always positions available in layout, production management, and event planning. Please email reader@hampshire.edu if you are interested.
