The Reader is Hampshire College’s annual literary and visual arts journal produced completely by students. It aims to showcase student-produced works emblematic of Hampshire College at the time of publication.
Committees (visual, prose/poetry, and mixed media) formed in the Fall semester hold weekly discussions on the criteria for making selections and on the layout design. Anyone interested in joining a committee should plan to attend an interest meeting to be held within the first two weeks of the Fall.
Submissions are accepted throughout the school year with a deadline in early March and publication in late April/early May.
The Reader is free and published using the Student Activities Fund.
The last issue, Vol. 21 (Spring 2015), marked The Reader’s 21st year in publication.
Submissions should be emailed to email@example.com. The deadline for the 2016 issue will be in early March, with an exact date TBA. All current Hampshire students are encouraged to submit writing or artwork regardless of their academic focus. Please note the guidelines below before submitting.
All work is anonymized before being considered by the editorial teams.
Submitters will receive a confirmation email once their work has been received.
Those whose work is accepted will receive a proof of their work as it will be laid out in the book to which they may make corrections.
The Reader staff does their best to promptly notify submitters once editorial decisions have been made. If you have not heard back by the end of March, please feel free to contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
All students are welcome to join the staff of The Reader. Based on students’ relevant experience and divisional status, the editors of the previous year decide who they would like to work with. There are always positions available in layout, production management, and event planning. Please email email@example.com if you are interested.
