“From the haute couture runways of<\/strong>\u00a0Paris and New York and editorial photo shoots for glossy fashion magazines to reality television, models have been\u00a0a<\/strong>\u00a0ubiquitous staple\u00a0of<\/strong>\u00a0twentieth- and twenty-first-century American consumer culture. In ‘Work<\/strong>!’ Elspeth H. Brown traces the\u00a0history<\/strong>\u00a0of<\/strong>\u00a0modeling<\/strong>\u00a0from the advent\u00a0of<\/strong>\u00a0photographic\u00a0modeling<\/strong>\u00a0in the early twentieth century to the rise\u00a0of<\/strong>\u00a0the supermodel in the 1980s. Brown outlines how the\u00a0modeling<\/strong>\u00a0industry sanitized and commercialized models’ sex appeal in order to elicit and channel desire into buying goods. She shows how this new form\u00a0of<\/strong>\u00a0sexuality-whether exhibited in the Ziegfeld Follies girls’ performance\u00a0of<\/strong>\u00a0Anglo-Saxon femininity or in African American models’ portrayal\u00a0of<\/strong>\u00a0black glamour in the 1960s-became\u00a0a<\/strong>\u00a0central element in consumer capitalism and\u00a0a<\/strong>\u00a0practice that has always been shaped by\u00a0queer<\/strong>\u00a0sensibilities.
