travels in the southern hemisphere"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Earlier this summer, I had the wonderful opportunity to travel to S\u00e3o Paulo and Rio de Janeiro with a group of American art librarians.\u00a0\u00a0 My colleagues on the trip included librarians from MoMA, the New York Public Library, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Massachusetts College of Art and Design, the Ghetty, the University of Texas at Austin School of Architecture, and many other great institutions. \u00a0\u00a0 We were all part of the Art Library Society of North America (ARLIS\/NA) contingent who went on a study group tour to meet our art librarian counterparts in Brazil.<a href=\"http:\/\/sites.hampshire.edu\/theharold\/files\/2015\/07\/Riopanorama.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" art libraries and museum libraries that we visited in S\u00e3o Paulo and Rio had many of the same journals, books, scanners, blogging platforms and challenges and opportunities for creating digital libraries that we have here.\u00a0\u00a0 Some of them also had great artist book collections.\u00a0 Among the places we visited were <a href=\"http:\/\/masp.art.br\/masp2010\/\">MASP, (the Museu de Arte de S\u00e3o Paulo)<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbm.usp.br\/\">Brasiliana Library<\/a> at S\u00e3o Paulo University, and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.artnews.com\/top200\/andrea-and-jose-olympio-pereira-2\/\">private collection of Andrea and Jos\u00e9 Olympio Pereira<\/a> in S\u00e3o Paulo.\u00a0 In Rio we toured the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.casadaros.net\/\">Casa Daros Museum and Library<\/a>, the Rare Book Collection of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bn.br\/biblioteca-nacional\">National Library, the <\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/eavparquelage.rj.gov.br\/\">Parque Lage School<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bn.br\/biblioteca-nacional\"> (School of Visual Arts), <\/a>the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mamrio.com.br\/\">Museu de Arte Moderna (MAM)<\/a>, and the private home of artist <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Anna_Bella_Geiger\">Anna Bella Geiger<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/sites.hampshire.edu\/theharold\/files\/2015\/07\/journalsPinocotecaEstada.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-3529\" learn about trends in Brazilian contemporary art and of particular artists and scholars&#8217; views.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 And in Rio, our group of American art librarians each gave a presentation on some aspect of their home institution so that our Brazilian art librarian counterparts could learn a bit about our U.S. institutions.\u00a0\u00a0 Since private and special collections as well as creating new physical spaces had been a focus on our tour, I gave my presentation on the Seydel Reading Room at the Hampshire College Library.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/sites.hampshire.edu\/theharold\/files\/2015\/07\/Rachelatconference.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-3531\" experience, so I wanted to share it with all of you!\u00a0\u00a0 I will be purchasing some books on Brazilian contemporary artists for the Hampshire College Library, and I&#8217;m always open to
