They&#8217;ve recently published an excellent book about food and dining in the early twentieth century called <a href=\"http:\/\/fcaw.library.umass.edu\/F\/?func=direct&amp;doc_number=013453604&amp;doc_library=FCL01\"><i>Repast: Dining Out at the Dawn of the New American Century, 1900-1910<\/i><\/a>. The talk will be in the Hampshire College Library\u2019s first floor on Thursday, November 21 at 4 PM. Staff from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amherstbooks.com\/\">Amherst Books<\/a> will be on hand with copies of the book for sale. This event is free and open to the public.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/sites.hampshire.edu\/theharold\/files\/2013\/11\/Repast-Cover.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1612\" alt=\"Repast Cover\" src=\"http:\/\/sites.hampshire.edu\/theharold\/files\/2013\/11\/Repast-Cover-260x300.jpg\" width=\"260\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.hampshire.edu\/theharold\/files\/2013\/11\/Repast-Cover-260x300.jpg 260w, https:\/\/sites.hampshire.edu\/theharold\/files\/2013\/11\/Repast-Cover-210x241.jpg 210w, https:\/\/sites.hampshire.edu\/theharold\/files\/2013\/11\/Repast-Cover.jpg 592w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 260px) 100vw, 260px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Hampshire College Archives is excited to host this talk. <i>Repast <\/i>is a work draws heavily from primary sources including the <a href=\"http:\/\/digitalgallery.nypl.org\/nypldigital\/explore\/dgexplore.cfm?col_id=159\">Buttolph American Menu Collection<\/a> at New York Public Library. Lesy and Stoffer will talk about their experiences using archival materials to create an insightful analysis of how Americans dined at the dawn of the \u201cnew century.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLesy and Stoffer do a fantastic job finding entertaining and engaging stories and telling them beautifully. They make the people of 1900 seem simultaneously very similar to us and so very different. It\u2019s amazing to see our familiar world slowly come into being through these lunch menus and food labels. In 2006 he was named one of the first United States Artists Fellowship recipients, and in 2013 was the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship. A professor of literary journalism at Hampshire College.<\/p>\n<p><strong><\/strong><strong>Lisa Stoffer<\/strong> is Amherst College\u2019s director of Foundation and Corporate Relations and comes from a family of chefs. Prior to being at Amherst College Lisa worked here at Hampshire between 1998 and 2007. We&#8217;re looking forward to welcoming Lisa back for the event!
