Material presented to be miraculous in the Qur\u02be\u0101n is one of the major categories of videos addressing science and Islam.\u00a0 <\/span>This page provides some context for these videos.<\/p>\n

\u201cClassically, the term i\u02bfj\u0101z<\/i> indicates the \u2018invalidation of a challenge,\u2019 the impossibility of imitating the Qur\u02be\u0101n as to its content and form. \u2026 This teaching is rooted in specific Qur\u02be\u0101nic passages such as 17:88: \u2018Say, \u2018If mankind and the jinn<\/i> gathered in order to produce the like of this Qur\u02be\u0101n, they could not produce the like of it, even if they were to each other assistants.\u2019 \u201d (Bigliardi, 2014, 38)\u00a0 <\/span>I\u02bfj\u0101z<\/i> as we\u2019re using it here is shorthand for i\u02bfj\u0101z \u02bfilm\u012b<\/i>, which might \u201cbe translated as \u2018scientific miracle\u2019 (or \u2018scientific miraculousness\u2019) of the Qur\u02be\u0101n.\u201d (Bigliardi, 2014, 38)\u00a0 <\/span>Those \u201cwho uphold and produce i\u02bfj\u0101z \u02bfilm\u012b<\/i> identify a correspondence between some passage of the Qur\u02be\u0101n and (what they perceive or present as) \u2018scientific data\u2019 or \u2018facts\u2019 to argue that such correspondence is proof of the divine origin of the Qur\u02be\u0101n itself.\u201d (Bigliardi, 2014, 38)<\/p>\n

I\u02bfj\u0101z<\/i> \u201cmay be classified as follows.<\/h3>\n

\u201c(a) The Qur\u02be\u0101n contains passages coinciding with scientific theories<\/i>; for instance the theory of an expanding universe.<\/p>\n

\u201c(b) The Qur\u02be\u0101n contains passages that describe natural phenomena<\/i> currently ascertained by science but unknown at the time of revelation. For instance: the development of the foetus in the mother\u2019s womb or planetary motion.<\/p>\n

\u201c(c) The Qur\u02be\u0101n contains passages that accurately describe specific, circumscribed facts or events or occurrences<\/i> currently ascertained by scientific investigation (possibly but not necessarily unknown at the time of the revelation). For instance: the preservation of the mummy of the Pharaoh who pursued Moses or the splitting of the Moon.<\/p>\n

\u201c(d) The Qur\u02be\u0101n contains passages that foretell contemporary scientific-technological developments or inventions<\/i>. For example: aviation or the exploration of space.<\/p>\n

\u201c(e) The Qur\u02be\u0101n displays numerical patterns that correspond to the numerical patterns exhibited by natural phenomena and\/or occurring in scientific laws<\/i>. This might be called numerological i\u02bfj\u0101z<\/i>.<\/p>\n

\u201c(f) Permanent or widespread natural phenomena (for example the shape of the continents or of an animal\u2019s skeleton) match some proper symbols<\/i> or terms<\/i> of Islam, such as the shah\u0101da<\/i> (i.e. the declaration of one\u2019s belief in the oneness of God and the acceptance of Muhammad as His Prophet), the name of God, or the positions of the prayer. No direct reference is made in this case to Qur\u02be\u0101nic passages. We might call this \u2018i\u02bfj\u0101z<\/i> without Qur\u02be\u0101n.\u2019 The i\u02bfj\u0101z<\/i> without Qur\u02be\u0101n seems to be a rather amateurish, homemade product; it requires minimal or even non-existent theological and scientific knowledge to be produced and its existence and emergence can be related to the increasing availability of computer programmes that allow easy manipulation of images.\u201d\u00a0 <\/span>(Bigliardi, 2014, 39-40, italics in original, footnotes omitted)<\/p>\n

\u201cAnother term used almost interchangeably with i\u02bfj\u0101z<\/i> (\u02bfilm\u012b<\/i>) is Bucailleism (or Bucaillism), from the name of the French physician Maurice Bucaille (1920-1998) who in his immensely popular book The Bible, the Quran and Science<\/i> (1976) as well as in other writings and conferences expressed the idea of harmony between Qur\u02be\u0101nic content and \u2018scientific\u2019 data with unprecedented clarity and the aura of a Western convert and a successful medical doctor. \u2026 Bucaille\u2019s work inspired a flood of similar ones, usually produced by authors trained in natural science or engineering and with no formal theological training.\u201d\u00a0 <\/span>(Bigliardi, 2014, 42)<\/p>\n

We use i\u02bfj\u0101z<\/i> as a category alongside the scientific fields because in these video materials, it generally functions that way.\u00a0 <\/span>By examining the videos and information on their original sites (about popularity and the like), one may begin to learn about the diversity of this category.<\/p>\n
