Insisting that abortion is not a legitimate part of family planning, and that contra- ception is the way to reduce the number of abortions, undermines women’s repro- ductive health and rights in a number of ways. The following are three of the most damaging consequences.
- It leads us away from addressing the root causes of unwanted pregnancy and maternal mortality.
- It stigmatizes abortion, women who have abortions and providers of abortion care, while undermining efforts to make abortion more accessible.
- It takes us back to the pre-Cairo days when women’s needs and rights, especially those of the most vulnerable, were systematically violated by demographic programs that denied individual agency.
