We produced this website at the Mount Holyoke College Art Museum as part of the Institute for Curatorial Practice (ICP) Summer Internship Program in July and August 2015, with generous funding from the Samuel H. Kress Foundation and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.
The Institute for Curatorial Practice began in June 2015 with an introduction to the history of museums, collections, and curating. Students examined diverse objects, display techniques, and museum careers during visits to art, science, and history museums in western Massachusetts’ Pioneer Valley and in New York City. We analyzed new directions in curatorial studies, focusing on current explorations in contemporary practice, issues of exhibiting across cultures, and new media platforms. Following these introductory weeks, we curated digital exhibitions. Using one object chosen from the Five College Museum collections as a catalyst, teams developed entire exhibitions inspired by that object.
We would like to extend our thanks to the core faculty of ICP: Karen Koehler, Director of the ICP and Professor of Architectural and Art History at Hampshire College; Christoph Cox, Professor of Philosophy at Hampshire College; John Stomberg, Florence Finch Abbott Director of the Mount Holyoke College Art Museum; Bradley Bailey, E. Rhodes and Leona B. Carpenter Postdoctoral Curatorial and Teaching Fellow in Japanese Prints at the Mead Art Museum, Amherst College; and Jocelyn Edens, Kress Curatorial Fellow at Hampshire College.
After the Institute concluded, we began our work at the Mount Holyoke College Art Museum for the ICP Summer Internship Program. It was a pleasure working with every member of the MHCAM staff. We were under the amazing supervision of Hannah Blunt, MHCAM Assistant Curator. Shanice worked primarily on research and writing, while Lisa concentrated on design and website development using WordPress. Both interns attended weekly seminars led by Amanda Gilvin, Visiting Assistant Professor at Skidmore College, and Jocelyn Edens. Whether it was research, writing, editing, or web design, they provided amazing support and encouragement for us.
And finally, we offer our sincere thanks to Judy Pfaff. Your dynamic artworks, your prolific artistic career, your creative journeys, and your educational work are truly inspirational.
