{"id":33,"date":"2012-12-11T18:44:14","date_gmt":"2012-12-11T18:44:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sites.hampshire.edu\/jwallen\/?page_id=33"},"modified":"2022-10-12T19:00:44","modified_gmt":"2022-10-12T19:00:44","slug":"bio-2","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/sites.hampshire.edu\/jwallen\/bio-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Bio"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Jeffrey Wallen, professor of comparative literature and Dean of the School of Humanities, Arts and Cultural Studies (HACU) from 2012-15, received an A.B. from Stanford University in comparative literature, an M.A. in English from Columbia University, and an M.A. in French and a Ph.D. in comparative literature from Johns Hopkins University.<\/p>\n<p>He has also taught as a visiting professor at the Free University Berlin and at the University of Toulouse, and has been the director of Hampshire&#8217;s semester-long study abroad program. He has published widely on nineteenth- and twentieth-century European literature; on biography and literary portraiture; on testimony, Holocaust literature, and Berlin Jewish history; and on debates about education.\u00a0 His book <i>Closed Encounters: Literary Politics and Public Culture<\/i> was published by the University of Minnesota Press.<\/p>\n<p>Some of his most recent publications are &#8220;Au Seuil, entre la vie et la morte&#8221; (in <em>Traces de vie \u00e0 Auschwitz: Un Manuscript clandestin)<\/em>, &#8220;Facing the <em>Sonderkommando<\/em>: <em>Son of Saul<\/em> and the Dynamics of Witnessing,&#8221; &#8220;Circuitous Journeys: The Migration of Objects and the Trusteeship of Memory,&#8221; &#8220;The Witness Against the Archive: Towards a Microhistory of Christianstadt,&#8221; &#8220;Beckett in Time of Crisis,&#8221; &#8220;Testimony and Taboo: The Perverse Writings of Ka-Tzetnik 135633,&#8221; &#8220;The Lure of the Archive: The Atlas Projects of Walid Raad,&#8221; &#8220;Migrant Visions: The Scheunenviertel and Boyle Heights, Los Angeles,&#8221; \u201cTwemlow\u2019s Abyss,\u201d &#8220;Narrative Tensions: The Eyewitness and the Archive,\u201d &#8220;Falling Under an Evil Influence,&#8221; &#8220;The Death and Discontents of Theory,&#8221; \u201cFrom the Archives\u201d (co-written with Arnold Dreyblatt), and &#8220;<i>Sociable Robots <\/i>und das Posthumane.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He is currently working on a study of the archive in contemporary thought and art.<\/p>\n<p>His teaching interests include 19th- and 20th-century comparative literature (German, French, British), critical theory, Holocaust Studies, Victorian Studies, Modernism, Jewish Studies, psychoanalysis, and philosophy.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Jeffrey Wallen, professor of comparative literature and Dean of the School of Humanities, Arts and Cultural Studies (HACU) from 2012-15, received an A.B. from Stanford University in comparative literature, an M.A. in English from Columbia University, and an M.A. in French and a Ph.D. in comparative literature from Johns Hopkins University.
