William Hogarth’s (1697-1764) Marriage à-la-Mode series tells a warning tale about the aristocracy who squander their money on foreign goods and excesses, particularly from England’s rival, France. The Marriage Settlement depicts the signing of a marriage contract between the Lord Squanderfield and a miserly merchant to wed their respective son and daughter. The following paintings show the fatal consequences of their chosen lifestyles.
