In the series “Student Voices,” current students write about the reasons they chose Hampshire and how our educational model works from their perspective.
In high school I always wished I could be doing more independent work. I never felt that I benefited much from taking tests and memorizing facts. I would have preferred to pursue subjects I was interested in, and to complete my own projects.
When I found out about Hampshire, it sounded like the perfect environment for students like me who are interested in doing more independent work in college. Instead of taking tests, students at Hampshire complete independent work, involving research and creativity. At most colleges, students must take required classes and exams to receive credit, but Hampshire students design their own majors, choose their own classes, and craft their own unique projects.
Most importantly, students complete their Division III project during their fourth year. The Division III is Hampshire’s equivalent to a senior thesis, except it is almost completely designed by the student. During their first three years at Hampshire (Divisions I and II), students choose classes that are relevant to their interests. By their fourth year, students have acquired the skills to design their Division III project.
I spent my first three years at Hampshire taking mostly studio art classes, art history, and writing workshops. In those classes, I had many opportunities to work independently and to research topics that interested me. Now in my fourth year, I am working on my Division III project, which is an illustrated novel.
While I have studied art and writing separately for several years, this is the first time I have both written and illustrated something. So far, it has been an enlightening experience.
The relationship between words and visuals has always fascinated me, and I greatly appreciate being able to explore this dynamic on my own terms. Designing and completing my own senior project is a big challenge, but the results have been rewarding.
As a student at Hampshire, I have learned to value independent work even more than I did before. Hampshire has provided me with a motivational environment in which I can creatively pursue my interests and complete projects that I am passionate about.
For other students who are enthusiastic about working independently, Hampshire College is worth looking into.
