Perkins-Hart, Eliza

Eliza Perkins-Hart is a 20-year old college student in her first year at Hampshire College with prospects for a career focused on music. She currently lives in her childhood home in Ann Arbor, Michigan, with her mom, brother, a dog, three cats and a leopard gecko. In her free time, Eliza likes to sing, play guitar, play with her dog, and to do puzzles.

Katie Scott works as a nurse at the University of Michigan, is on the Board of the Michigan Nurses Association, and is the Washtenaw County Commissioner.  As Commissioner, Katie is in charge of keeping the people in her county safe and being prepared for emergencies such as the pandemic. As a nurse, she has first-hand experience with COVID19 and its effects on doctors and nurses in terms of fatigue and stress. She lives in Ann Arbor, Michigan, with her son and her partner.

Reflection:  In conducting this interview with Katie Scott, I learned a lot about the inner workings of a county when faced with an unprecedented emergency such as the COVID-19 pandemic. Katie explained what measures she took as County Commissioner to keep the County and the University safe. She also talked about the effect of the pandemic on nurses and the challenges of burnout as well as creating protocols to keep nurses and their families safe. It was really interesting to me to find out how the Board of Commissioners and the University communicate with each other to make sure they are both on the same page about what steps they are taking to keep as many people as possible safe and healthy.
