Reflection: The interview for the Hampshire College COVID-19 Oral History Archives was extremely insightful. My interview was with Patrick Waugh, a Spencer Police Officer. Hearing about the experiences of a first responder during the pandemic shed some light on the challenges that are faced by front-line workers. Some of these challenges include lack of resources (i.e. masks, protective gear, cleaning supplies) and fear for personal safety. Some of Patrick’s experiences were unique and unsettling.
I think this interview will be an important part of the Archives because it highlights the fear surrounding the unknown. For many of us, we may have felt afraid of the outcome that COVID-19 could bring, but we could do so within the safety of our homes. First responders are in the thick of it and have no choice but to risk their lives every day just to do their job. Overall, the interview impacted my perspectives and provided knowledge about what Patrick experienced during this pandemic.
