Edwards, Nyamekye

Nyamekye (“Nyah”) Edwards: I’m a first-year student at Hampshire College. I emigrated from Jamaica at age 12, which is one of my motives for choosing my aunt for this interview.

Asheka Williams:  My aunt, Asheka Williams, is from Jamaica. She works as a Bank Reconciliation Officer in the Ministry of Finance in Jamaica. She has a Bachelor’s degree in business and finance. Asheka travels a lot and overall is a very outgoing person.

Reflection: This interview went better than I had expected. It was fun and lively. In some ways, it brought me closer to my aunt and it was very informative. I did not know about the curfew laws of Jamaica, and now I do. I also expected the new laws to change lives. But I had no idea it changed my aunt’s life as much as I found out in our interview. My aunt was very comfortable doing the interview. She was very thoughtful and had amazing answers. Also, the interview was short and she is a genius. I asked one question and she answered three with one answer. I actually ended up asking around six of originally twenty questions: talk about killing two birds with one stone! Minus the technical issues I faced, this was a cool experience.
