Constanza, Nancy

My name is Nancy Yasmin Constanza Galicia. I am a Division I, a first-year student at Hampshire College, and I am part of the James Baldwin Program and Undocumented Scholars at Hampshire College. I am interested in studying chemical engineering and something related to business, especially accounting.

I interviewed Judah Doty who is a Division II, a third-year student at Hampshire College. Judah was born in 1983 in New Orleans, Louisiana. Judah met her boyfriend in Cuba. The last time they saw each other was December 2019 – January 2020. But since the pandemic started, they haven’t seen each other because nobody can leave or come into the United States and the same thing is happening with other countries, especially with Cuba, which has really strict requirements related to the virus.

Reflection: At first, I was worried that the interview would not be good because I felt very nervous and I did not practice as many times in order to say that I was ready to do it. I also had never been an interviewer before, I just had been the interviewee.  But after doing my interview, I realized that it is very different to ask compared to answering. In the end, I am very satisfied with what I achieved: the interview went well, I had no technical problems, and my interviewee answered all my questions. Now I know all the work that’s forged after conducting an interview.

After the interview, I realized that this virus has taught us many good and bad things. For my interviewee, it has been good and bad at the same time. Among the good things are: to know her boyfriend in a deeper way and have more time to have calls to talk. Both of them had time to do things that maybe they didn’t have time if the pandemic hadn’t happened.  I think this happened to all of us.  Before the pandemic, we were so worried about work, school, life, dreams, etc., but now we have time to take care of ourselves. The bad things are that we can’t travel, especially for people like my interviewee, who has a boyfriend in another country. Also, all of us as humans in general are used to having a lot of freedom, without having someone to order us or tell us what to do. But with this virus, all that changed. The restrictions have emotionally affected many people because now we’re all at home with a lot of free time and not knowing what to do. But we have to be positive and try to support those who need it most.
