Campus Engaged Learning for 1st Year Students

Campus Engaged Learning for Division I

In Spring 2010, the Hampshire College faculty and trustees passed a new set of academic guidelines for the Division 1 First Year Program effective September 2011 that incorporates community engaged learning. The motion reads as follows:

“Students are required to complete a minimum of seven faculty-evaluated courses and at least one Campus Engaged Learning Activity during Division I.”

The rationales for the Campus Engaged Learning portion of the Division 1 requirement are two-fold:

[1] Hampshire’s commitment to its motto, Non Satis Scire [To Know Is Not Enough], encourages all students and faculty to make active connections between their academic pursuits and their participation in the larger world. This includes sustained learning outside the traditional classroom, and

[2] The desire to enrich every new students’ sense of community and belonging as they enter the life of the college by fostering their involvement in collective, collaborative projects, programs and activities within Hampshire’s shared community.
