Art Questions, HACU 245 with Karen Koehler

What is art? This semester, students in the course Art Questions investigated works of literature, art, architecture, sound, performance, and film to explore concepts such as authenticity, forgery, appropriation, transcendence, mimesis, representation, commitment, and dissidence.

This series of questions culminated in a final project in which students curated digital exhibitions around objects in Hampshire College’s art, archival, circulating, and special collections that raise an enduring question about art. The interviews, texts, images, and sounds on an ipad installation supplement and further contextualize the exhibitions on the Magic Board.

Many of the physical objects from Hampshire collections that prompted these exhibitions are on view in vitrines installed on the first floor of the Harold F. Johnson Library.

The course was made possible with funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities.
