Hampshire College IT Seeks System Administrator

Hampshire College, an independent, innovative liberal arts institution and member of the Five College consortium, is accepting applications for a system administrator in the Office of Information Technology.

The system administrator provides support, maintenance, configuration, planning, upgrading, and implementation of the College’s server and storage infrastructure in collaboration with the Senior System Administrator.

A bachelor’s degree or equivalent is required for this position. Qualified candidates must have at least two years job-related experience with Debian, Ubuntu, Red Hat, or similar GNU/Linux flavors and related services, programs and protocols, e.g. Apache, Samba, RAID, DHCP, SMTP, DNS in an enterprise or education environment. Familiarity with vmWare or equivalent virtualization technologies, and experience with current enterprise storage technologies, such as EqualLogic or equivalent is preferred.

Applicants should be able to learn and implement new solutions quickly; have strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills; and possess the inventiveness, creativity, and ability to create in-house solutions to meet our custom needs. Working knowledge of Windows server OSes and their upkeep preferred; basic working knowledge of networking concepts, protocols, and operating systems is a plus. Candidate must be able to lift and carry boxes weighing 25 pounds. This position will require occasional evening and weekend hours. A commitment to working with people from diverse backgrounds is essential.

Tech Tip Summer Extra: Hiring a New Employee?

If you’re hiring a new employee, your work doesn’t end with the offer acceptance. To ensure a smooth transition, please fill out the New Employee Computing Request Form well before their start date.

When a new employee starts, or a Hampshire employee transfers to another department, IT has several tasks to undertake:

  • Set up email access.
  • Set up access to servers as appropriate
  • Set up Datatel access as appropriate.
  • Procure and / or set up a computer.
  • Set up phone lines.
  • Provide training on IT resources.

All of these things take time and planning, so for your new employee’s sake we request that you submit the form as soon as you have a start date. The information you will need to fill out the form includes:

  • The employee’s full name.
  • The start date.
  • Where the employee’s office will be.
  • Whether you already have a computer for the employee, or if you will be needing an additional one; if it’s an additional computer, the preference of type (Mac/PC, desktop/portable).
  • What servers the employee may need access to.

Please join us in welcoming aboard Amanda Saklad, our new IT assistant. Amanda works half time and her office is located on the third floor of the library across from the diagnostic center.

Amanda is responsible for procuring computers, software and other technology for the College; coordinating replacement and renewal cycles for computers and software; coordinating the College’s program for personal faculty/staff computer and software purchases; advising students on computer and software purchasing options; and processing invoices, reimbursements, budget transfers and deposits. She will also be doing some basic support for instructional technology systems such as Moodle, streaming video, and classroom equipment.

Seeking Information Technology Assistant

The IT Assistant procures computers, software and other technology for the college; coordinates replacement and renewal cycles for computers and software; coordinates the college’s program for personal faculty/staff computer and software purchases; advises students on computer and software purchasing options. Candidate will process invoices, reimbursements, budget transfers and deposits.

The IT Assistant also performs basic maintenance and support tasks for instructional technology systems such as Moodle, streaming video, and classroom equipment. Candidate will provide general administrative support to IT department managers as needed, as well as information and assistance to the college community and general public as requested.

Associates Degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience required. A minimum of 3 years purchasing experience preferably in an academic setting also required. Qualified candidates must be proficient with both Mac and PC, have excellent verbal and written communication skills, organizational skills, and the ability to manage multiple priorities. Must be able to lift and carry boxes weighing 25 pounds. Commitment to working with people from diverse backgrounds required.

This is a17.50 hr. /wk., 12-month position with a work schedule of Monday, 8:30 – 1:30; Tuesday and Wednesday, 8:30 – 12:30; and Thursday, 8:30 – 1:00. Flexibility with schedule is possible.
