New Families: Move-In and Orientation Information

Submitted by on July 9, 2013 – 10:26 amNo Comment

On Hampshire College campus and the surrounding Connecticut River Valley, the summer is starting to heat up. But we’re already thinking about August, when incoming students will arrive for orientation!

There are a few different resources to help new students and their families prepare for orientation, move-in, the beginning of classes, and even continue with advice and guidance for the whole of their first year as they get into the swing of things.

For Families

Opening Day (move-in) is August 29, 2013. Check out our photo-narrative post from last year.

The day after, Hampshire offers Family Orientation, an optional, in-depth series of workshops, panels, and informational events designed to give families a deeper understanding of Hampshire College and its resources. This is a great opportunity to meet administrators, staff, and faculty who will be working with your student at Hampshire. (Approximately one-third of students have a family member who stays for Family Orientation.) Plus, there will be an evening reading by the this year’s common reading author, Edward Humes 75F.

Family Relations offeres a Family Resources page with lots of links to frequently asked about information. This blog will get updated with information all summer; check out the Reading Suggestions from Eliza McArdle, Ph.D., director, Counseling Services. If you’re unsure who to contact with a question or a comment, Family Relations is just an email away at

For Students

The Office of New Student Programs posts the New Student Newsletter and runs the newtohamp blog. They run New Student Orientation and programs for first year students throughout the year.
