When Jon, who often goes by the nickname, Honan, realized that, after transferring to Hampshire, his course credits put him a semester ahead of schedule, he decided to take a semester off from Hampshire to visit friends at the University of Illinois, and pursue the kind of self-driven dreams for which Hampshire students and alums are famous.

After months of red tape concerning restaurant and food service laws, his one-cart hot dog operation is up and running, based on the University of Illinois campus and marketing itself as a food delivery service to “hungry college kids.” In fact, Jon says that he gets the best business at night, from students looking for a snack.

Jon studies video production and computer programming, so it was an obvious choice to create a University-of-Illinois-lifestyle video game, featuring Man’s Best Friend Hot Dogs prominently (you can collect hot dogs from under your roommate’s pillow for extra points) which can be found and played on their website.

His ingenuity has sparked a lengthy thread on the social news website, Reddit, and coverage in University of Illinois’ independent student newspaper, The Daily Illini.grand opening

“Man’s Best Friend was born because I wanted to start a business. I was also really hungry and hot dogs are the only things I know how to cook,” Jon remarked. “The most exciting thing is that I don’t have a boss.”

Once back at Hampshire, Jon will be passing Division II, and preparing for his Division III project, for which he hopes to create a campus-wide television program.

You can keep up with Jon’s business on Man’s Best Friend’s website, twitter, or facebook.
